Charlie Chan is a fictional Honolulu police detective created by author Earl Derr Biggers for a series of mystery novels. Biggers loosely based Chan on Hawaiian detective Chang Apana. The benevolent and heroic Chan was conceived of as an alternative to Yellow Peril stereotypes and villains like Fu Manchu.

Many stories feature Chan traveling the world beyond Hawaii as he investigates mysteries and solves crimes. Chan first appeared in Biggers' novels and then was featured in a number of media.

Over four dozen films featuring Charlie Chan were made, beginning in The character, featured only as a supporting character, was first portrayed by East Asian actors, and the films met with little success.

After Toler's death, six films were made, starring Roland Winters. Readers and moviegoers of America greeted Chan warmly, seeing him as an attractive character who is portrayed as intelligent, heroic, benevolent, and honorable in contrast to the racist depictions of evil or conniving Asians which often dominated Hollywood and national media in the early 20th century. However, in later decades critics increasingly took a more ambivalent view of the character, finding that despite his good qualities, Chan also reinforces condescending Asian stereotypes such as an alleged incapacity to speak idiomatic English and a tradition-bound and subservient nature.

Many also now find it objectionable that the role was played on screen by Caucasian actors in yellowface. Due in large part to this reappraisal of the character, no Charlie Chan film has been produced since The character has also been featured in several radio programstwo television showsand comics.

Many newspapers with paywalls lowered them for some or all of their coronavirus coverage. Conspiracy theories have appeared in both social media and mainstream news outlets, and are heavily influenced by geopolitics. Nature Medicine published an article arguing against the conspiracy theory that the virus was created artificially.

The high-affinity binding of the virus' peplomers to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 ACE2 was shown to be "most likely the result of natural selection on a human or human-like ACE2 that permits another optimal binding solution to arise".

QAnon may best be understood as an example of what historian Richard Hofstadter called in " The Paranoid Style in American Politics ", related to religious millenarianism and apocalypticism. According to one QAnon video, the battle between Trump and "the cabal" is of "biblical proportions", a "fight for earth, of good versus evil. The average score on the feeling thermometer was just above This is a very negative rating, and about half of what […] other political figures […] enjoy. Experts have classified the appeal of QAnon as similar to that of religious cults. According to expert in online conspiracy Renee DiResta, the QAnon pattern is similar to enticement into cults in the pre-Internet era, where as the targeted person was led deeper and deeper into the group's secrets, they become more and more isolated from friends and family outside of the cult.

All cults will provide this feeling of being special. QAnon is an example of what historian Richard Hofstadter called in " The Paranoid Style in American Politics ", in which history and political trends are seen in apocalyptic terms:.

The paranoid spokesman He is always manning the barricades of civilization. He constantly lives at a turning point. Like religious millennialists he expresses the anxiety of those who are living through the last days and he is sometimes disposed to set a date for the apocalypseOn August 10,American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was found unresponsive in his Metropolitan Correctional Center jail cell, where he was awaiting trial on new sex trafficking charges.

The New York City medical examiner ruled Epstein's death a suicide by hanging, however, Epstein's lawyers challenged that conclusion and opened their own investigation. Michael Badenwho was hired by Epstein's brother to oversee the autopsy, has since become the most vocal proponent of the theory of homicidal strangulation rather than suicidal hanging. After initially expressing suspicion, Attorney General William Barr described Epstein's death as "a perfect storm of screw-ups.

Department of Justice's Inspector General are conducting investigations into the circumstances of his death. The guards on duty were later charged with conspiracy and record falsification. As a result of his death, all charges against Epstein were dismissed, and ongoing sex-trafficking investigations shifted attention towards his alleged associates.

Due to violations of normal jail procedures on the night of Epstein's death, [note 1] the malfunction of two cameras in front of his cell, and his claimed knowledge of compromising information about powerful figures, his death generated speculation and conspiracy theories [3] about the possibility that he was murdered. Under the plea deal he pled guilty to two state felony charges, paid restitution to three dozen victims identified by the FBI, and registered as a sex offender in both the states of Florida and New York.

Zionist Occupation Government conspiracy theory

He was viewed as a potential flight risk due to his 20 international flights in the prior 18 months. At the time of his death, this case was still pending. On July 23, Epstein was found semiconscious in his cell with injuries to his neck. He told his lawyers that he had been assaulted by his cellmate. As a result of the incident, Epstein was placed on suicide watch.

Epstein was reportedly depositing funds into other prisoners' accounts to gain their favor or buy protection. In it, he complained about large bugs crawling on his body, guard Tova Noel giving him burnt food, and a guard intentionally locking him in a shower cell without clothes for an hour. The will named two longtime employees as executors, and immediately gifted all of his assets, and any assets remaining in his estate, to a trust. The jail informed the Justice Department, when Epstein was placed in the special housing unit SHUthat he would have a cellmate and that a guard would look into the cell every 30 minutes.

These procedures were not followed on the night he died. The evening of his death, Epstein met with his lawyers, who described him as "upbeat" before being escorted back to the SHU at PM by guard Tova Noel. As the guards were distributing breakfast shortly after AM on the morning of August 10, Epstein was found unresponsive in cardiac arrest in his cell, which was initially reported as apparent suicide.

The sheet was tied to the top of his bunk. If it was posted by a first responder, as it has been speculated, it would likely be a violation of privacy law.

Epstein's death was the first suicide at the MCC in 14 years. Michael Baden and 60 Minutes have questioned if Epstein, who was almost 6 feet tall and weighed pounds, could have physically been able to hang himself from the lower bunk. Photos taken after the death also show bottles and medicine standing upright on the top bunk. Epstein's lawyers sent pathologist Michael Baden to personally observe the city's autopsy.
